The artists, both sculptors and partners, imagined a kind of shelf gesture nodding to their home collection of things and sculptural remnants. They made collaborative hybrids of prominent forms in each of their practices: the busts being a recurring mold in Nevine’s work and the wood corbels being an extension of Skylar’s use of found materials. The bust is cast in the curved frame of a child’s chair and the upcycled corbels’ rococo embellishment sends mixed signals. Both artists explore figuration in sculpture and the use of ornament in figurative space. The “gewgaw” works tweak assumed hierarchies around ornament and sculpture, support and object, display and display structure. The ornate is structural and what is unfinished is fetish.
