JOE ZORRILLA

City Birds and Cones

May 21 - August 30, 2021

Joe Zorrilla's show at The Finley mixes new and old work across several media and parallel processes: a suite of 4 drawings from a series based on birds observed in his local environment, a photograph of a sculptural detail of a cupped hand, and a site-specific sculptural installation echoing the dimensions of the staircase landing and comprised of two conical concrete pillars with pine cones embedded in their tops and Oulipian textual detailing around their necks (concrete poems). In distinctive Zorrillan fashion, the constellation of works ricochet associations between them to produce an evocative scene of emanation and reverberation in which logic-based pictorial procedures, figuration, and experimental linguistic abstraction play out like inverted songs sung by the same city bird.
